Have no fears my friends. ipadio makes it simple.

In the past I did buy a nice microphone, sound mixer, downloaded audio recording software, found a place that would feed my audio up to itunes and was successful. If you search hard enough you just might find a podcast of me singing Row Row Row Your Boat. (True story) But it all seemed like sort of a pain and I didn't really have much to talk about at the time so it ended there.

Jump forward a few years. I was researching some new trends in using cell phones in the classroom for an upcoming training, I discovered ipadio . They claim you can simply dial a toll-free number, enter in a pin code and you would be broadcasting to the web. Really ? It sounded a bit too easy.

Of course I tried it. It really was that easy. I signed up on their website, received an email with the phone number I needed to call and 4 minutes later there was a recording from my phone on the internet. They even transcribed it. For free.

Ok, the transcription could use a little work but if you ever wanted to try podcasting, or a simple audio recording of your class in an easy to use manner, I recommend giving ipadio a try.

Oh, what's a phlog ? It's a phone blog. Below is a link to me and my friend Donna at a recent training about cell phones.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> As iPad and other tablet computer use continues to grow, many programs want to know how to use them in their classroom. Sarah Lund, an instructor at one of the Minnesota Literacy Council's learning centers, was kind enough to share this lesson with us.

Last month, the Employment Readiness 2 class at Arlington Hills did a month long unit on job interviewing skills and using iPads.

Students started by watching videos of job interviews that were developed through Rochester ABE. http://www.ricdwyer.com/ABE/Print_Materials.html

The students watched the videos and then made decisions on if the video was a “good” interview or a “bad” interview and discussed why they thought that way.

They then spent time pulling out the interview questions and, in pairs, practiced interviewing each other with the same questions from the videos.

Once the students felt comfortable answering the questions, they began using iPads to learn how to take videos. Once everyone was comfortable, the students videotaped each other being interviewed. The teacher uploaded each video to Youtube and then the students watched all the videos as a class. Students rated each other’s interviews on the following criteria:

1. Could you hear?
2. Could you understand?
3. Was the person friendly?

The students rated each category with this following scale:

3 – Very Good
2 – So-So
1 – Not very good

This was the top rated video from the class:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVuRgkP6NAI

And this was the bottom rated video: (because he answered his cell phone during the interview!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0s3RJtObVM

Thanks Sarah!
We would love to hear reader comments and questions.
Enter dontbreakthechain.com

The website was inspired by a goal setting exercise used by Jerry Seinfeld. Yep, that Jerry Seinfeld. He would take a calendar and put a large X on each day he worked on his comedy. His goal was to work on his comedy every day. The theory is that a visual of getting things done is a great motivator to continue. Filling his calendar with X's, Jerry created a chain that he didn't want to break.

To use the website ,you create an account and simply click on the date to mark that you worked on your goal that day. You can set up multiple calendars and view calendars by different date ranges.

One thing I did to further help me reach my goal is to set the website a my home page. That way each time I access the internet I am reminded to continue my "chain". Give it a try and good luck on your goals!
I really do.
However I grow tired of never ending updates for every single piece of software I use, especially the ones I seldom use. So away with you my well meaning updater, I will venture into the great interweb using my current version until something changes my mind.

As of this moment Adobe Reader is the software that feels the need to fill my hard drive with its latest update and here is how I am going to turn it off.
Open Adobe Reader >> Choose Edit >> Preferences
To this end here is a list of things to consider before buying anything.

Will children/dogs/in-laws hide, eat, chew, break, wash, demolish, walk away with, lick, or destroy it ?
Many times things happen to my stuff that I end up feeling like I should have known better than to show off my new Ipod to my 2 year old who was sticky fingered and holding a sharp object at the time. Be smart about what you give and ask for.

Now what ?
I normally don't like to shop big box stores for technology as they do not always have a good way of servicing things except by mailing them away for a month or more. But one year we did buy a nice computer and printer from a chain store because it was the only store in 100 miles where my parents would be able to return it and get ink for the printer. Thinking about what happens after the unwrapping is done is what makes you a good gift giver.

But Grasshopper I want one now!
Often times new tech comes out in the Spring, so you might be better off waiting a few months for the new release of the latest Ithing. Ask the retailor or search online to see when the new models come out. At that time prices on the now "old" models will be less as well. Personally I believe that birthday's are the time to shower people with the best gifts, less competition.

Ummm...help please.
Just as many parents stay up late the night before to assemble gifts for their kids, many of us kids stay up late trying to troubleshoot technology for our parents. If you are the tech person in the family, assume that will be your job to help your dad figure out how to use the remote, download a song & enter in phone contacts on the new toys you bought them. (P.S. Also, make sure the big screen fits in your parents car. A story for another day.)

A note about Thanksgiving.
I know this post skipped over all the things I am most thankful for, fear not , I will be telling them all (in person) tomorrow.

Yesterday was GIVE TO THE MAX DAY for many charities and as part of GiveMN.org, the Minnesota Literacy Council raised thousands of dollars to help support our literacy work!

A mighty Thank You All to our supporters!

The Bad News

We have two Dell 713w inkjet printers and after putting in a new ink cartridge and printing 50+ pages it told me the official Dell ink cartridge is not authenticated and refuses to print. (sigh)

This has been an ongoing issue for both printers, about every third time we put in a cartridge it gives us some sort of error. The first time they actually sent out "new" (refurbished) printers. Now, we contact the help desk, troubleshoot, then they send us a replacement ink cartridge.

Unfortunately the wasted time and frustration has led me to say... Bad News Dell ! I, as captain of this blog, officially do NOT recommend your 713w printer.

The Dutch design firm StudioStudio has created
a typeface that can be read by dyslexics more easily and with fewer errors. For the full story http://www.springwise.com/style_design/dyslexie/

In one of the sessions, people had a hard time getting signed up for a Gmail account which I think makes it frustrating for people trying to learn Google Docs. An idea occurred to me (sadly after the training had finished) to use my Gmail account to invite others.

I would like to hear anyone else's comments on using the invitation feature in Gmail. Is it easier than just signing up ? Is there any downside to using it ?

Looking forward to learning from your experiences and comments!
1. Sort by Size, find the biggest email and you will usually discover photos or powerpoint presentations. If you dont need them, ditch them. If you really want to keep them, save them in Dropbox, on a jumpdrive or even on your hard drive.

Messages sent via email do not need to stay in email.

2. Sort by Date. List your emails from oldest to newest and you will discover that you really do have emails from 2007. Delete the relics. Most people can get by with stuff no older than 6 months.

3. Sort by Sender. I get tons of newsletters that seem like a good thing to read later and they hide amoung the emails I really need. Sorting by sender lets you rid yourself of hidden non-treasures. This sort is also a good way to rediscover those emails from past fellow employees letting you know what their new email address is. Read it, add their info to your contacts, delete the email.

Geek Secret

Many email programs allow to to see how many total (not just new) emails you have in your Inbox and other email folders. In MS Office you can right click on an email folder > Choose Properties> Check the box for Show Total Number of Items.

While I am someone who lives in the digital age , I still love paper and loving paper means loving my printer; even when it doesn't love me back.

Often times when we get a printing error, we try things like looking for a paper jam or turning it off and then back on. Both are valid trouble shooting steps but don't forget to actually look to the printer for help. We currently have a number of Brother printers within our organizaiton and they have stood the test of time very well, but when they don't the first thing I do is look for the flashing led lights to determine what the problem is.

Sometimes it is something simple like low toner cartridge.

Other times the problem may be indicated my multiple blinking lights. Either way, the Brother Solution Center has very nice trouble shooting instructions complete with blinking lights to mimic what you might see on your printer.

There are dozens of printer brands out there so if a Brother is not what you have, check your printer manufactor's website for helpful troubleshooting tips.

Epson Support
Now if I could only fix the jam in my stapler....

A copy of my presentation handout and the handouts of many of the presenters can be found on the Literacy Action Network's website.

Enjoy!
